Why Gen-Z Can’t Avoid Anxiety

Gen Z often receives significant pushback from older generations. Have you ever heard anyone older than you say that you have it too easy? Maybe they’re quick to talk about the things that have happened in their lives that you didn’t have to experience.

Whatever the case, it’s impossible for any generation to fully understand what another has been through or is currently going through. In reality, Gen-Z has dealt with a lot and continues to face issues that are unique to their specific generation.

As a result, it’s estimated that about 61% of Gen Z has a diagnosed anxiety condition. Why is that number so high? Why can’t Gen Z avoid anxiety? More importantly, what can you do to combat it and prevent yourself from becoming a statistic?

Global Issues

While almost every generation faces societal and global issues that can trigger anxiety, Gen Z has seen them over and over at a somewhat rapid pace. To begin with, this generation has experienced significant economic fluctuations, including the 2008 financial crisis. While you might not have been an adult at that time, you likely saw your parents or caregivers trying to manage it, and you might have been confused or scared based on news media reports talking about a crisis you could do nothing about.

Gen Z was also directly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps you had to miss school for a year, disconnecting from friends, familiarity, and the routine you loved. Research has shown spikes in anxiety and depression in young people throughout COVID-19, and unfortunately, we’re still feeling the effects of that today.

Gen Z is also keenly aware of some of the major issues the world is facing today, including global warming, systemic racism, and political polarization. As you think about your future, these situations can feel ominous and daunting.

Too Much Tech

Technology is a great thing, and Gen Zers were born into a world where fast-paced tech already existed. Unfortunately, sometimes, technology can do more harm than good.

Social media exposure, for example, can lead to unrealistic expectations of success, beauty, and social status. Whether you’re following influencers or comparing yourself to peers, constant scrolling can trigger anxiety.

Digital overload can also cause you to feel isolated. Ironically, technology is designed to help us feel more connected. However, it often keeps us from having deeper, meaningful relationships. Online interactions can never replace connecting with someone in person, and the isolation that tends to creep in when we lose sight of that can wreak havoc on our mental health.

Pressure and a Fear of Failure

Since most Gen Zers are in school, it’s understandable to feel a lot of pressure in nearly every area of life. You might struggle with academic pressure as you think about your future and want to find success. You may face social pressure, trying to fit in and form relationships.

Gen Z can also struggle with the fear of failure and rejection. You’re trying to navigate life’s challenges in an ever-changing world, and that can lead to a lot of uncertainty and the “what ifs” that tend to fuel anxiety.
