5 Ways to Navigate New Job Anxiety
Starting a new job is exciting, but it can also be nerve-wracking. You’re going to a new place, meeting new people, and entering into a new position in which you may or may not already have experience.
Whatever the case, those nerves can sometimes get the best of you, causing new job anxiety. While it’s normal to have some first-day jitters, it’s not ideal to let this new job anxiety impact your work or personal life.
Thankfully, there are things you can do to navigate this type of anxiety and make the most of your new career choice.
1. Prepare Yourself
Anxiety tends to get worse when we’re faced with a lot of unknowns and “what if” scenarios. While you can’t control everything, planning can help avoid potential issues in your new position.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions to make sure you understand your employer’s expectations and ensure that your own are realistic. If you can, consider shadowing someone else in a similar position so you get used to the environment and meet some of your co-workers ahead of time. By planning and preparing, you’ll eliminate some of the uncertainty that might fuel your anxiety.
2. Balance Is Key
It’s important to remember that your job isn’t your whole life. In the first few days of your new position, have something positive to look forward to after work. That could include a special dessert, a night out with friends, or even a new outfit.
While it might not be realistic to reward yourself every night, doing so for a few days can help remind you that your job doesn’t define who you are. Eventually, you’ll be able to find a healthy work-life balance that lets you enjoy your time at home while looking forward to going to work each day.
3. Talk About Your Feelings
Sharing your anxious feelings with someone at work is not unprofessional or uncommon. Maybe there’s a co-worker you feel a connection with right away or even an employer who wants you to be an open book about your thoughts.
Keeping your feelings inside will typically only make them worse. So, don’t hesitate to open up. If you’re not comfortable sharing your anxieties at work, talk to a friend, family member, or even a mental health professional about your struggles. Talking about your emotions can help you better understand and work through them.
4. Lean into Wellness Support
Prioritizing personal wellness might not be at the top of your list when starting a new job, but it should be! Getting enough sleep, staying physically active, and eating healthy meals are all simple forms of wellness support that can boost your mental health and help you perform at your top level.
Take the time to do at least one thing each day that benefits your overall well-being. If you’re really struggling with anxiety, try a hands-on activity, breathing exercises to reduce stress and take control.
5. Think Positively
Once anxiety creeps in, it’s easy for it to change your mindset into a negative one. Try to focus on the positive things about your job. What are you most excited about? What are you looking forward to as you progress in your career? Remind yourself why you got hired, and practice self-validation every day. You’re in this position for a reason, and by thinking positively about yourself and your job, you’ll feel more empowered to fight back against anxiety.
New job butterflies will usually go away on their own. However, if you’re continually struggling with anxiety symptoms over a new position, you don’t have to handle them by yourself. Contact us to learn more about individual therapy at Forward Together Counseling.
